We welcome pilots of all experience levels. Whether you fly heavy airliners or light general aviation aircraft, integrating into the network requires a few basic principles.

How to file a plan

Know Your Aircraft

Before connecting, ensure you are comfortable operating your chosen aircraft. You should be able to maintain altitude, heading, and speed as instructed by controllers without pausing the simulator.

Patience & Respect

Our controllers are volunteers dedicating their time. If frequencies are busy, wait for a natural break before transmitting. Treat everyone on the frequency with professional courtesy.

Real-Time Weather

The network operates using live, real-world weather. Always configure your simulator to use live weather data so your altimeter settings and wind conditions match the controller's radar.

Keep It Updated

Aviation data changes regularly. We highly recommend using an updated AIRAC cycle to ensure your navigational database aligns with the routes and procedures controllers will assign.

Listen Before You Speak

When tuning to a new frequency, wait at least 5-10 seconds before transmitting. This ensures you do not interrupt an ongoing instruction or readback between the controller and another pilot.

Golden Rule

A stepped-on transmission helps no one. Monitor the rhythm first.

The Initial Contact

Keep your first call brief. State who you are calling, your callsign, your location, and your ATIS information letter. Wait for the controller to acknowledge you before passing a lengthy request.

Example

"Tower, Delivery, Network Air 123, Stand 42, with Information Alpha."

Mandatory Readbacks

You must read back all clearances, headings, altitudes, speeds, runway assignments, and transponder codes. Always end your readback with your aircraft callsign.

Filing A Flight Plan

Every IFR flight, and some VFR flights, require a valid flight plan submitted to the network before departure. This allows controllers to integrate you seamlessly into the traffic flow.

Equipment & Wake Categories

Ensure your aircraft type and wake turbulence category are correct. This dictates the separation distance controllers must maintain behind your aircraft.

Valid Routing

Use a flight planning tool to generate a realistic route. Avoid filing direct GPS routes across large airspaces unless specifically flying off-airways VFR.

Remarks (RMK)

If you are new to the network, add "NEW PILOT" to your remarks. Controllers will see this and provide extra assistance and patience during your flight.

Quick Answers

Do I need a microphone to fly?

While voice communication provides the most realistic and efficient experience, text-only pilots are welcome. If you are text-only, indicate "/T/" in your flight plan remarks so controllers know to send instructions via text.

What happens if I make a mistake?

Everyone makes mistakes, including real-world pilots. Simply state "correction" and provide the right information. If you get entirely lost, tell the controller "unfamiliar" and they will issue radar vectors to help you.

Can I pause my simulator?

No. When connected to the live network, your aircraft is interacting with other live traffic. Pausing causes disruptions and separation conflicts. If you must leave briefly, notify the controller or disconnect from the network.
